I took a two-semester course on Assembly Language Programming, Digital Logic, and Computer Architecture and this book was amazing. We covered the basics of digital logic (binary, octal, and hexadecimal arithmetic, 1s and 2s complement, Boolean algebra, combinational logic, etc.) the first semester so by the time we got to this book in the second semester, we skipped the first two chapters and most of the third and went straight into adders and flip-flops.The author discusses the organization of A Simple Computer (ASC), but given what little time we had, we were tasked with building a Very Simple Computer (VSC), a primitive 8-bit computer (5-bit memory, 3-bit opcode) capable of performing basic arithmetic. We read just the chapters on combinational circuits, synchronous sequential circuits, organization & programming, hardware design, and memory.The point is that we only used about half the material in the book and we were able to build an 8-bit computer from TTL chips. If you read the thing cover to cover, you'd be able to build a 16- or 32-bit machine no problem. It was a ton of fun and this book was an absolute lifesaver. Together, the book and course fundamentally changed the way I look at computers and I have a much better understanding of how they operate and what's inside them.

About the Author

Michael J. Thali has written many virtual autopsy papers (see www.virtopsy.com) and is editor of the book The Virtopsy Approach. He has been a professor of forensic medicine at the University of Bern, Switzerland since 2006, and at the time of finishing this book is the director of the Forensic Institute at the University of Bern.

Mark D. Viner is a Fellow of Cranfield University Forensic Institute, Chief Executive of the Inforce Foundation, and a Senior Manager at St. Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals. He has a long-held interest in forensic imaging and emergency planning, developed during almost 30 years of experience as radiographer and radiology manager in the United Kingdom.

B.G. Brogdon’s interest and experience in forensic radiology goes back more than 40 years to a time when he was radiologist-in- charge at the Division of Diagnostic Radiology at Johns Hopkins. His involvement in the field continued throughout his tenures as professor and Chair of the Departments of Radiology at the University of New Mexico and, later, at the University of South Alabama where he is now University Distinguished Professor Emeritus.

From Publishers Weekly Grade 4-8-Jim?nez has created a moving autobiography that some critics have compared to John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. The story, originally published in English as The Circuit, begins in Mexico when the author is very young and his parents inform him that they are going on a very long trip to "El Norte." What follows is a series of stories of the family's unending migration from one farm to another as they search for the next harvesting job. Each story is told from the point of view of the author as a young child. The simple and direct narrative stays true to this perspective, never falling into moralistic or clich?d patterns. The backbreaking work and the soul-crushing effect of the endless packing and moving are portrayed through a child's dismay at having to leave a school where he has just gotten comfortable or, worse, having to miss several months of a school year in order to work. Panchito's desire to help his family by working in the fields often clashes with his academic yearning. In this case, as in the case of many Mexican migrant farm workers, the American dream never comes to fruition. Lifting the story up from the mundane, Jim?nez deftly portrays the strong bonds of love that hold this family together. An afterword recorded by the author gives even more background on his family. About the Author Francisco Jimenez emigrated from Tlaquepaque, Mexico, to California, where he worked for many years in the fields with his family. He received both his master's degree and his Ph.D. from Columbia University and is now professor emeritus in the Modern Languages and LiteratureDepartment at Santa Clara University, the setting of much of his novel, Reaching Out. He is the award-winning author of The Circuit, Cajas de carton, Breaking Through, Senderos fronterizos, Mas Alla de mi, Taking Hold, The Christmas Gift/El Regalo de la Navidad and La Mariposa. He is the recipient of many national literary awards, among them arethe John Steinbeck Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Americas Award the Pura Belpré Honor Book Award, the Tomás Rivera BookAward, Reading the World Award, and the Carter C. Woodson National Book Award. He lives with his family in Santa Clara, California
