Only 3🌟 yet I'll read the next book. I actually enjoyed much of this one, the problem comes from parts that make no sense-it says one thing and in the next sentence completely contradicts what it just said. This happens often, if just once I could have ignored it. Instead I'm left reading again and again the same page and sentences trying to make sense of it! Hopefully by the next book this problem will be fixed. Unfortunately it's not something spell-check would catch, but with the number of people I assume read these both prior to and after submission, there's no excuse for this. That's why I rated it as I did. ðŸº
This review contains mild spoilers.“Bayou Born†is interesting overall, the protagonist rather prickly, setting & ambiance were good, and at first, the paranormal elements added to the police story. As usual, I had difficulty getting past the fantasy insta-love, and in this case, the man was written over-the-top masculine and his description became annoying. Half-mountain? The mountain? Baby Mountain? Then in chapter 15 dragons appeared . . . unexpectedly for me. After a few more chapters, there were so many fantasy elements introduced that I began seriously thinking: Parody or a send-up of some kind? I’m not listing examples, because I’ve already dropped a dragon spoiler.I did read to the end, and although I knew from the start that this is book 1 of a series, I decided to treat this as a stand-alone. This is doable because I decided that chapter 25 was “The End,†thus ignoring the epilogue which is a lead-in to the next book of the series.Note to the otherwise wonderful editors: The following yanked me right out of the story!Helped facilitatedCouncilor vs counselor
To start off, I gave Bayou Born 5 stars because it hooked me enough that I tried to search up its sequel right after I clicked the "off" switch on my kindle. Unfortunately, the sequel won't be out until the spring, so I'll have to wait until then! :(I stumbled upon this book through facebook; an author who's friends with an author who's friends with an author posted a website that had recommendations for new releases in the urban fantasy genre. I'd never read anything by Hailey Edwards before, but I'm definitely going to check out her other books.ANYWAY! Bayou Born focuses on Luce Boudreaux, a Mississippi cop whose background is both mysterious and fodder for the media in her town. She was found in the swamp when she was seemingly 10 years old and later adopted by one of the officers who found her. Aside from the otherness of being found feral in a swamp, she was born with metallic bindings around her upper body, markings that are strangely resilient, that even reappear after they're removed.Despite having them all her life, Luce has no idea what they are or even where she came from. Her life is a blank slate that starts with the day she was found. One thing she knows for sure is that every year, on her "birthday," she must be home by midnight to answer a disconnected rotary phone. The mysterious Ezra, whom she knows nothing about, is the only way for her to be cured of the anxiety and pain that grips her in that moment. As far as birthday rituals go, I'll stick with cake and candles, thank you very much.Luce's life gets more complicated when an ongoing investigation brings a private security firm (staffed by the imposing and mysterious Cole), supergator, and the abduction of someone near and dear to her heart, into her life.I enjoyed Bayou Born. The information comes in a bit of the "slow burn" format; it's not until about halfway through the book that the reader REALLY starts to get more insight into who and what the members of the security firm are, and just what Luce's true origins are as well. I don't mind the slow reveal of detail. Edwards takes that time to build character and to help the reader learn more about Luce's past as she knows it, and to start building up Luce's own curiosity in the strange group of men (and Portia) who are suddenly important to her.SPOILERS AHEAD.....Edwards take on demons was an interesting one. She takes the road less traveled and starts to present the idea that demon may not be synonymous with villain. The coterie (this will make sense once you read the book) each have their own backstories, that start to show the variety of cultures and personalities she is creating in her cast of characters. I liked that she was giving each person his or her own dimension and story, instead of making them all the same type of demon. There's enough playful flirtation for those who are a fan of romance, or even the possibility of it. We clearly see Cole as a potential romantic entanglement, though his story comes with a lot of baggage. There's also the mysterious Ezra. Edwards gives us the final chapter in his alternate perspective, and it becomes clear that he has no plans to leave Luce's life anytime soon. A clash between the two men seems inevitable, though it's completely possible they know each other, given Luce's own ignorance to her real origins pre-founding.I'd like to get more information on backstory of Luce's "alter ego," but I'm willing to wait until the second book can throw a few more crumbs to me!
After a week of 11 snacks (books by a different author) at last a full, fine meal. Tasty and satisfying. At first I was simply drawn in, then washed away by the need for answers. You spend over three quarters of the book not quite sure how to define what your reading. All you know for sure is that it is compelling. Luce and Cole are intriguing, dynamic and ultimately different. The novel is tight and well wrought. The pacing, dialogue, characterizations full, the wit is subtle yet snappy. This is what good reading is all about. Open the cover, buckle in, the ride will take you where you haven't been before. That said, I want my next volume now..
I've enjoyed all of her series, and each new one is a gem better than it's predecessor! I started with the Black Dog Series, loving Grier in the undead series and started this one to pass the time.. Holy moly, I don't know how Hailey doesit. But she keeps you on the edge with twists, turns and loops that are deserving of a roller coaster in an amazing theme park. Each book and new series better than the last and guaranteed to be a ride you've never ridden before. Well done to Hailey and her team. My only complaint is I read the books in a day, and that leaves me with cravings and withdrawals until my next fix in the next book. Too long in between, I wish I could just snap my fingers and have the next book already here and ready; a steady non-ending supply of your stories, and characters, their senses of humor and the twists and turns of plots.Thank you for all you do and write,Melissa (avid book reader-aka reading junkie)
